STPL Fabric Heritage

Fabric quality plays a defining role in the comfort, fit and longevity of clothing. Our aim is to create a timeless collection which can be worn again and again.

Fabric heritage plays a huge role in our sourcing decisions because it means that the fabric we use has been developed and perfected throughout generations.

This is why we travelled from the mountains of Northern Peru to the rolling hills of  Maserada Del Piave, a commune lying just outside Venice where the Monti family have been creating incredible fabrics since 1911.

PERU.

Peru is renowned for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and a deeply rooted fabric heritage that dates back thousands of years. The art of weaving in Peru is more than just a craft; it’s a living tradition passed down through generations, reflecting the country’s rich history, diverse culture, and connection to the natural world. From the intricate textiles of the ancient Paracas civilization to the enduring techniques of the Andean weavers, Peru’s fabric heritage is a testament to creativity, resilience, and sustainable craftsmanship.

Weaving is one of the oldest traditions in the world. In fact, since 2500 BCE it has been an important part of Peruvian culture. It sits at the very core of the Quechua culture, shaping personal and regional identities, and acting as a form of inter-regional communication. Some people vest their entire sense of personal identity in their occupation as a weaver, stating that without weaving they would no longer have an identity.

ITALY

Italian Oxford cotton is a shining example of Italy's rich textile heritage, reflecting centuries of craftsmanship, artistry, and innovation. The origins of this fabric lie in the centuries-old weaving traditions of Italy, particularly in regions like Veneto and Lombardy, renowned for their skilled artisans and state-of-the-art mills. Italian textile producers have always been at the forefront of transforming natural fibers like cotton into luxurious fabrics that combine durability with elegance

The Monti family has a long-standing legacy in the textile industry, particularly with their cotton spinning and fabric production operations based in Maserada sul Piave, Italy. Founded officially in 1911, Tessitura Monti grew from a family tradition of producing high-quality fabrics into a globally recognized name. The company specializes in crafting premium shirting fabrics, with a strong emphasis on innovation and sustainability.

Moreover, the company’s commitment to sustainability enhances the appeal of their cotton. From ethical sourcing to environmentally conscious production methods, Monti ensures that their fabrics meet modern standards of responsibility while maintaining timeless elegance. This dual focus on heritage and innovation cements their cotton as a top choice for the iconic STPL Oxford.
